Cover Cover: Cell-specific expression, distribution, and targeting of endogenous Arf1 small GTPase along the nephron shown in a collage of figure panels. Arf1 is not exclusively targeted to the trans-Golgi network (TGN)/Golgi complex in kidney epithelial cells in situ. In proximal tubules, Arf1 is targeted to the apical pole, where it colocalizes with megalin and Arf6 (yellow; 1st and 2nd rows, left). Arf1 is also located in the TGN/Golgi complex of proximal tubules (green; 1st row, right), where it colocalizes with TGN38 (red; 2nd row, right). In collecting ducts, Arf6 is associated with basolateral vesicles (green; 3rd row, left) but not with the TGN/Golgi complex (red), whereas Arf1 (green; 4th row, left) is mainly targeted to the plasma membrane and not to the TGN/Golgi complex (red). In contrast, in glomerular podocytes, Arf1 (green) is exclusively targeted to the TGN/Golgi complex, where it colocalizes with TGN38 (red; 3rd and 4th rows, right). See related article by El Annan J, Brown D, Breton S, Bourgoin S, Ausiello DA, and Marshansky V. Am J Physiol Cell Physiol 286: C768-C778, 2004.
