Cover: Immunohistochemical analysis of two inwardly rectifying potassium channels, Kir5.1 (green) and Kir4.1 (red), in rat retina. The distribution pattern of Kir5.1 is different from that of Kir4.1, which was previously shown to be expressed on retinal Müller cell membranes. Kir5.1 is partly colocalized with Kir4.1 in the inner nuclear layer (INL), suggesting that Kir5.1 is expressed in Müller cells. Kir5.1 immunoreactivity is not concentrated around blood vessels, where Kir4.1 is shown to be strongly clustered. On the other hand, the immunoreactivity of Kir5.1, but not that of Kir4.1, is detected in a subset of second-order neurons in the INL, which possibly belong to amacrine neurons.
