Cover: A map showing the distribution of tractions exerted by a human airway smooth muscle cell cultured on a flexible polyacrylamide gel substrate, after treatment with 0.01 mM histamine. Tractions were recovered by Fourier Transform Traction Cytometry from displacements of fluorescent microbeads embedded in the gel. Arrows show the relative magnitude and direction of the tractions; colors show the magnitude of the traction vectors, ranging from the neighborhood of 100 Pa at lower left to 300 Pa at upper right. Any resemblance to another living creature is purely coincidental. See related article by Butler JP, Tolic-Norrelykke IM, Fabry B, and Fredbert JJ. Am J Physiol Cell Physiol 282: C595-C605, 2002. First published October 31, 2001; 10.1152/ajpcell.00270.2001.
